BITTERSWEETS CANDYHEARTS
A heart-shaped box of sugar-coated candies with various messages on the candies, a close-up of a heart-shaped mint tin labeled "BitterSweets," and three additional heart-shaped tins in blue, red, and green with messages, all on a beige background with the words "Hated, Sugar-coated" written at the top, and red lipstick kiss marks at the bottom.
A vintage-style advertisement for Bitter Sweets candies in a heart-shaped green box. The candies have humorous sayings printed on them, like 'NO MON NO FUN' and 'U LEFT SEATUP'. The ad promotes a series of candies with messages meant to resemble emotional messages or tears. There are red lipstick kiss marks and a URL at the bottom.

This print campaign extended into a free-for-download smart phone application with five functions, playfully based on the five stages of grief. Each of the five functions were unlocked by a unique code received with the purchase of a Bittersweets product.

Stage 1: Denial

Smartphone screen displaying a red cupid with the text "Off Target".

You’re not denying that it happened, just the idea that love can exist for anyone else. “Off Target” is a touch-based game where you ruin others’ happiness by deflecting Cupid’s arrows.

Destroy a heart until it looks like your own. Shake the phone, bouncing and cracking the heart against the borders of the screen. Option to send the shattered end result to the person who did the real-life damage.

Stage 2: Anger

A smartphone with a black screen displaying the words "Fragile Heart" in pink text, and an image of a red, broken heart at the bottom.

“Maybe if they feel some pain, I’ll feel less of it.” A fair trade. Fasten the image of your ex to the face of a digital VooDoo doll. From there, have at it with little pins of vengeance, dragging and pushing them into the areas you miss and, therefore, hate the most now.

Stage 3: Bargaining

A smartphone screen displays a voodoo doll dressed in a suit with nails through its limbs, lying on a surface, with pins stuck into its head and body.

“Feeling PlayedList” analyzes your iTunes/Spotify library and creates a playlist dedicated to the songs relating to heartbreak. Air Supply, anyone?

Bittersweets will also create its own “Heartbreak Station” unlockable on Pandora and available as an iTunes download with a 3-set purchase.

Stage 4: Depression

A mobile phone playing an audio track with an album cover showing a red, broken heart with white wings on a light background.

You’re ready to move on and delete them in style. Digitally burn all photos of your ex from your memory as well as your Facebook / Flickr / Photo Roll.

Do each photo individually or gather them all at once for a bonfire. Any actual warmth you’ll feel is only from within.

Stage 5: Acceptance

A smartphone screen displays a background of fried chicken pieces, with four Polaroid photos of silhouettes of a person, arranged overlapping in front.
